Sevier River Retrievers Q&A (Question & Answers)

"Every boy should have two things... a dog, and a mother willing to let him have one"

Why is Sevier River Retrievers different than other breeders?

Here at Sevier River Retrievers, we can promise your puppy will be loved, snuggled, and cared for with the best of care. In addition to breeding the best possible lines, imported from all over the world, we LOVE the puppies. All of our adult dogs are on high-performance dog food, get plenty of exercise and lots of love which in return helps to make very healthy puppies.

Proper nutrition when the puppies are first born is very important.  It is a very high priority to us to ensure that our puppies receive the proper nutrition they need to grow and be the best they can. We rotate our puppies several times a day to ensure all the puppies get the proper nourishment they need while nursing. At three weeks we will soften a high-quality puppy food and introduce probiotics.  We nurse our puppies until 7 WEEKS and then transition them over to solid puppy food so when they join your family they are completely transitioned over to solid food.

We pride ourselves in providing each of our puppies with the best possible care, strong pedigrees with many champion lines, health checking all of our dogs. Two-year health guarantee,  and loving them and then loving them some more!

Do you have a guarantee?

Yes we offer a two year health guarantee on  hips, elbows and eyes...as well as a lifelong support and friendship!

What type of training does Sevier River Retrievers offer?

It all starts at the very moment they are born.  We start Early Neurological stimulation.   There are five points we work on from the the beginning.

1. Tactical-stimulation

2. Head-held-erect

3. Head-point-down

4. Supine-position

5. Thermal-stimulation

By doing these at an early age it provides some amazing benefits.  Improved cardiovascular, stronger heartbeat, stronger adrenal glands, tolerance to stress, and great resistance to disease.  We continue these exercises until day 16.  Starting on day seventeen we start with introducing them to several different elements.  We focus on Sensory, emotional, and social skills.  We expose them to different sounds, sights, smells, textures, and people.  Excellent socialization is what helps our puppies to be able to be trained to do many different things. From being a great family dog to doing service work, and therapy work at hospitals and schools.

Secondly, we work on basic commands. Such as chewing on the appropriate things, as well as learning to sit before praise is given. This helps them to be able to make the transition much easier.  We also have many resources that come highly recommended in helping to train your puppy.

How does Sevier River Retrievers help me pick out the right puppy for me?

It starts at the very beginning. We get to know each puppy and their personalities very well: from the very beginning of helping them nurse to the first time they eat puppy food. We are there every step of the way to watch, play, and observe. We place colored collars on them at a young age. We then start watching and following their personalities...more active, more laid back, likes to be more in charge, loves to snuggle, etc. All those traits are observed and noted on each puppy. We are then able to suggest certain puppies depending on your end goal and personal preferences.

Training Programs

Sevier River Retrievers will send your puppy home with the best sensory, emotional, and social skills to make your training with your new puppy a success.  We have many different options available to help with the training for your newest family member.

At Sevier River Retrievers we take a lot of pride in providing the best start we possibly can for our puppies. We remove their dewclaws when they are 3-5 days old. Our puppies are then de-wormed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age.

Can I meet the puppy's parents?

You are always welcome to come by visit and meet our dogs and our family. We stay in contact with many of the people we sell puppies to and often think of them as part of our family. A friendship for a lifetime.  We call it our big puppy family!

What will Sevier River Retrievers provide when I pick up my puppy?

Our first goal is to make the transition for the puppy and you the best it can be.

We will provide the complete record of all veterinarian care your puppy has received, AKC registration, and copies of the parents' pedigrees.

How do I pick up or transport my puppy?

There are two different options. The first option is picking it up directly from us. We prefer this method. In that case, you would want to bring a collar, leash, crate, watering dish, and food dish. You will find a list of items we recommend you purchase if you are flying in to pick up your puppy.

The second option would be to fly with your puppy.  Depending on which airline you choose, there will be different regulations to follow.  We have a handful of different items we recommend that are listed below on our website to help you with this process.  To help you with this event we will meet you at the airport to save you the cost and time of a rental car.  We charge a $75 fee to meet you at the airport.

Helpful Items when transporting your puppy on the airplane:

  • Dog Carrier - Jespet Portable Comfort

  • Water/Food Dishes - Comsun Collapsible Dog Bowl

  • Puppy Harness - BPS Voyager harness

What do I need when picking up my puppy?

The distance you may be traveling will determine the amount of water and food you will need. We recommend bringing a crate, water dish, food dish, collar, and leash.

When will I need to take my puppy back to the veterinarian?

Sevier River Retrievers will send you home with a complete record of all the shots, the brand of shot, and the dates the shots were given. The following chart will be helpful in knowing when you need to return back to the vet.

Should I Spay or Neuter my puppy?

All of our puppies at Sevier River Retrievers are sold on a limited registration, meaning you are unable to breed your dog. It is highly recommended that you spay or neuter your dog. Sexually mature dogs can change in personality, energy levels, and it can also cause health problems down the road.

Do you charge extra to keep the puppy longer?

We are happy to accommodate you and your family's schedule the best we can.  We are happy to keep your puppy up to the age of 9 weeks.  Once your puppy reaches 9 weeks old there will be a $100 charge for each additional week.

What do I need to buy for my new puppy?

Depending on how you decided to train your puppy, we highly recommend crate training. When buying a crate you will want to buy a large one. We also recommend buying puppy pads to have at home.  You can purchase them in many different sizes. They are washable, safe, and very absorbent. You can purchase them before you come and pick up your puppy.  You are welcome to use the puppy food of your choice but we are currently using Purina Puppy Chow. If you do decide to switch food, you will want to make a gradual change.
